Objective control in LoL: how to stop giving away dragons, heralds and barons
Many players think they lose objectives because their team does not help. Sometimes that is true. But many times the objective was already lost before it spawned: bad wave, late reset, no vision or an unnecessary death 40 seconds earlier.
The objective starts before the timer
A dragon is not prepared when it appears on the map. It is prepared between 90 and 45 seconds before. In that window you decide whether you have based, bought, kept enough health, placed vision and managed waves that let you rotate. If you arrive at river once dragon is already alive, you are usually late.
The team that arrives first does not only start the objective: it controls the entrances. That forces the opponent to walk in blind, spend resources checking the area, or give it up. That is the difference between contesting and donating.
The 60-second checklist
When a major objective is about one minute away, check this before taking any fight.
- Have I reset or am I stuck with unspent gold?
- Do I have enough health and mana to fight or should I give pressure?
- Can my trinket, control ward or sweeper provide real vision?
- Does mid wave allow my team to move first?
- If I die now, is the objective free? If the answer is yes, that fight does not exist.
Not every objective should be fought
One of the biggest differences between climbing players and hardstuck players is knowing when to give. Fighting a dragon 3v5 with no vision and no ultimates is not bravery: it turns one lost objective into a lost ace.
If you cannot contest, trade. Push top, take plates, invade camps, take a tower or set vision for the next objective. The problem is not giving one dragon; the problem is giving dragon, dying, and gaining nothing elsewhere on the map.
