Tempo deaths: why you die right before dragon spawns (and how to stop)

Some deaths cost 300 gold and some deaths cost a dragon soul. The difference isn't how you die — it's WHEN. A "tempo death" is one that happens exactly when a major objective is at stake, and it's the single most common pattern in players stuck between Iron and Platinum.

What a tempo death actually is

Dragon spawns and you've been dead for 15 seconds: your team fights 4v5 or hands the objective over without a fight. The death itself might have been "just a death" — a lane trade, a river skirmish — but its real cost is the objective your team can no longer contest.

The 60-90 second rule: from a minute and a half before a major objective spawns, the map changes its rules. A fight that would normally be fine (dying 1-for-1 far away) becomes a strategic loss, because your death timer overlaps the objective window.

Three versions of the same mistake

Almost every tempo death falls into one of these buckets:

  • The impatient facecheck: you walk into river or the enemy jungle without vision, 30-60 seconds before the spawn, and get caught by the players rotating to the objective.
  • The inherited fight: an ally engages badly near the objective and you "have to" follow. Dying to clean up someone else's mistake still costs you the dragon all the same.
  • The greedy sidelane: you stay for one more wave on the opposite side of the map with the objective about to spawn. You don't die — your team dies 4v5.

How to train it

Set a mental alarm on every objective timer. At ~90 seconds out, ask one question before every action: "if this goes wrong, do I make it to the objective?". If the answer is no, the action is off-limits — no matter how tempting.

After each game, review your deaths in the two minutes before each dragon/herald/baron kill or spawn. If you find one in most of your games, you've found your training priority.
