How to review a LoL replay without wasting time: watch the minutes that matter
Watching an entire League of Legends match can be useful, but it can also become an hour of staring at the screen without learning anything. The key is not watching everything: it is watching the minutes where one decision changed the game and understanding what you should have done differently.
Do not watch the game like a viewer
The most common replay mistake is watching it like a broadcast: free camera, flashy fights and mental comments about what your team did wrong. That is entertaining, but it is not training. A replay only improves your game if it answers a concrete question.
Before opening it, choose one focus: deaths before objectives, resets, CS at minute 10, vision, forced fights or objective trades. If you watch everything at once, you fix nothing. If you watch one thing across five games, patterns start appearing.
The four moments you should actually watch
For a quick review, start with these checkpoints. They are enough to catch most LP-costing mistakes.
- Your deaths: watch the 20 seconds before, not just the death itself. The real mistake is usually the path, wave, vision or decision to stay.
- Major objectives: review the minute before every dragon, herald or baron. Ask whether you arrived with tempo, health, vision and priority.
- Minute 10: compare CS, plates, experience and wave state against your direct opponent. This shows whether you truly won lane.
- Decisive fights: pause right before committing. Ask what information you had and whether there was a better alternative: reset, push side, give, or force another objective.
Turn every mistake into a rule
A review that ends with 'I need to play better' is useless. It is too abstract. The review should end with one simple rule for the next ranked game: do not facecheck without support, reset 45 seconds before dragon, do not fight without wave pushed, spend trinket before entering river.
The rule must be measurable. If you cannot check after the game whether you followed it, it is not a rule: it is a wish. Wishes do not climb; measurable habits do.
